Grace and Style

--- by John Saunders ---
David Balston - Penarth Grammar School Cricket 1st XI

My memories of Dai are very vivid, perhaps because we lived in the same Road. He of course was the closest to the school and thus managed to get to school comparatively well presented at all times. He probably never got booked for not wearing his cap, like the rest of us – he was that close.

Unfortunately we did not relate as closely as we might have because we seemed, despite the fact that we lived in the same road, to take many different paths. To name a few – he started off in Form 1 and I started off in 1A. He took Sciences and I took Arts in our subject electives. He played hockey and cricket, I played rugby and tennis. I think he played tennis at Windsor and I played tennis at Rectory Road. It was almost uncanny.

But the abiding image I will always have was of Dai in his cricket whites where he stepped up into a different dimension as the most elegant of opening batsmen (or was it number 3/4?). He had grace and style and from the crease could look down on his peers imperiously.

Picture attached is of two of David's Grammar School classmates attending the 2011 reunion in Penarth.

Please accept our warmest wishes for a great celebration on the big day,

John Saunders and Carol (nee Thomas) Edwards
